The Bridge Over the River Kwai with Train

The Highlights

After the Japanese had occupied Thailand in the Second World War, they planned a Second link between Thailand and Burma to supply their troops. At that time, the 320 m bridge was Thailand’s second longest Bridge. The steel and wooden bridges were constantly bombarded and had to be repaired repeatedly. Besides that, one used a train ferry, and 1945 the operation was finally stopped.

In reality, the lack of hygiene in the camps thus caused diseases was the biggest problem for the forced labourers. Inhumane treatment was shown as a war crime.

Today, 131 km is still operating on the Thai side to Nam Tok, mainly for tourist reasons. Besides 50,000 to 70,000 Pow, 200,000 Asian forced labourers and hundreds of thousands of Thai civilians were used as forced labours to construct this line. One had promised wages to the civilians but never paid.

Depending on the estimates, 40000-90000 people died during the construction of the track.

The Bridge got its literary monument in the novel “The Bridge over the River Kwai” by the French novelist Pierre Boulle and later in the movie “The Bridge on the River Kwai” directed by David Lean. Not at least by the soundtrack, The River Kwai March, the film remains unforgettable.
